The Henry and Stark County Health Departments announce that members of their staff and personnel from two area school districts recently attended the 6th Annual School Wellness Conference. Alison Womack, Community Health Advisor/Specialist and Carrie Boelens, Community Health Educator, and staff from the Wethersfield and Stark County School Districts attended this important conference held recently at the Hilton Hotel in Springfield.
Womack states, "The theme for this year's conference was "The School Day Keeps Getting Healthier." The goal for the conference was to provide participants an understanding of enhancing academic success through health school environments."
The conference supports the work facilitated by the "We Choose Health" grant focused on coordinated school health. Recently, Stark County Elementary School completed the School Health Index component of the Coordinated School Health Initiative and Wethersfield Elementary School is beginning the School Health Index component.
Womack notes, "The Annual School Wellness Conference featured a multitude of interesting topics addressing enhancing physical education in Illinois schools, sharing healthy foods in schools; healthy fundraisers and celebrations, making our students healthy for a lifetime; an update on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010; school health initiatives; new national nutrition education standards; free health and wellness programs; and employees staff wellness.
Those attending this conference included school administrators, school nurses, educators, food service staff, wellness committee members, parents, and anyone else wanting to learn more about encouraging healthy lifestyles and healthy food at school.
